2024 Provincial Election: Engaging Candidates

Provincial Election

On October 19th, voters across BC will elect a new provincial government to lead the province for the next four years. Crucial, time sensitive decisions about how our province will face the biodiversity and climate crises and many other issues will be made by this 2024-2028 government.

Engaging Candidates

Since 2011, the SCCA has provided candidates engagement opportunities for Sunshine Coast voters to hear from candidates in every level of government on environmental issues. This year, we will engage  provincial MLA candidates with written Q&A and host an in-person forum at the Roberts Creek Hall.

We strongly encourage all citizens of the Sunshine Coast to engage in the provincial electoral process and learn where your candidates stand on critical environmental issues.

Written Q&A

We have sent candidates four written questions and asked them to submit written responses to us by October 2nd. The Q&A will be posted here on our website, shared and promoted to our mailing list, partner networks, and on social media by October 3rd.

Environmental Candidates Forum

The SCCA is hosting a Candidates Forum on Sunday October 6th, from 3 to 5 pm at the Roberts Creek Hall. Doors open at 2:30 pm.

JOIN this event to ask questions and learn more about where your provincial candidates stand on critical environmental issues facing our community, future generations, and all life on earth.

The format of the event will be as follows:

  1. Each candidate will be given three minutes to introduce themselves and describe their party’s positions on key issues.
  2. Questions from the public will be posed to the candidates by the moderator.
  3. Candidates will have 90 seconds or less to respond to each question.
  4. Questions may be directed to one or more of the candidates.
  5. Candidates are welcome to respond to questions that are not posed directly to them.

NOTE:

  • We will not be asking candidates to speak to our written questions as we have done in previous years. Instead we will post the Q&A online and send it out to our mailing list and via social media ahead of the meeting. We encourage everyone to read the Q&A in advance and come prepared with questions of your own. If you are not on our mailing list, please sign up here!
  • Only vetted candidates from parties with representation in the House of Commons or BC Legislature have been invited to to participate in election engagement events.
Questions from the Public

Our goal with this event is to engage as many constituents as possible across the riding to hear where the candidates for MLA (member of the Legislative Assembly) and their political parties stand on environmental issues.

This event is not a platform for speeches from members of the public. We want to hear direct answers to direct questions about environmental issues from the candidates seeking to represent us. We will do our best to take as many questions as possible, on as many topics relating to provincial environmental issues as possible.

To achieve this goal, this event will not include an open mic for questions from the public. Instead, members of the public will be asked to submit questions in writing. Our team will compile a list of questions which will be given to a moderator who will pose questions aloud to the candidates. Candidates will each be given two minutes to answer each question.

Questions may be submitted to the SCCA before and during the meeting in one of three ways:

  • In advance: Send us an email to communications@thescca.ca with your question in it anytime before the meeting starts. We will compile a list of questions for the moderator.
  • In person during the meeting: On a piece of paper submitted during the meeting. (Note: Pens and paper will be provided.)
  • Online during the meeting: Participants watching the event online may type a question into the comments section. Our team will pull questions out and add them to the list for the moderator.

Please note duplicate questions will not be posed to the candidates.
