22. Mountain Goat Winter Ranges (MGWR)
British Columbia is home to more than half the world's mountain goat population, and as home for mountain goat winter ranges, we are responsible for protecting these habitats. Mountain goat winter ranges are forested stands that provide the goats with food and shelter under any winter conditions.
The winter ranges are typically occupied while the female goats are pregnant or nursing young. As reproduction and early life stages heavily depend on winter ranges, without this range protection, the iconic Mountain Goat species would disappear. Fortunately, as of 2016, the Province has protected over 100,000 hectares of high elevation winter habitat as Mountain Goat Ungulate Winter Range (UWR). These lands also contribute to much needed general biodiversity protection.

Biogeoclimatic (BEC) Zone: the classification system used to identify an area based on the dominant type of vegetation, climate, and soil characteristics at its climax
Climax Old-Growth: the final stage of a forest stand when left undisturbed by humans
