There’s something special about volunteering that transforms both the volunteer and the community. For over a decade, the Sunshine Coast Conservation Association (SCCA) has been fortunate to have dedicated volunteers like Maggie Kalve-Guzzi, whose warmth and enthusiasm have helped shape our conservation efforts. Whether engaging with visitors at community events or participating in hands-on environmental monitoring, Maggie embodies the spirit of community service that makes our work possible.
Hear from Maggie:
“I’ve been volunteering with the SCCA for many years. I often host at the SCCA booth at events, which is not physically demanding. I also volunteer for the forage fish sampling program with Dianne Sandford, which is more physical. I love it!
Volunteering at the booth for Oceans Day at the park in Sechelt was my first volunteer position with the SCCA. I enjoy meeting new people and connecting with them. You learn so much. I find being out in the community very positive, and it’s an excellent opportunity to give back.
I’m not an expert on the significant issues in conservation, but I have learned a lot as a volunteer with the SCCA. As a host, I’ve found that when you have good listening skills and take an interest in what other people have to say, you learn even more about the natural world. You’re doing a small part, but it’s essential. It’s fun and you get the sense you are making a difference. Being part of a group that makes a better life for everyone. It’s rewarding to be part of a group like this and to help foster awareness about important issues such as protecting the watersheds and our water supply.”
Maggie’s story reflects what makes the SCCA’s volunteer community so unique – the joy of connection, the thrill of learning, and the satisfaction of making a real difference in protecting our precious coastal environment. Whether you have a few hours to spare at community events or want to get involved in our environmental monitoring programs, there’s a place for you at the SCCA.
Join volunteers like Maggie in creating a legacy of conservation for future generations!
