We at the SCCA encourage our Powell River area supporters to attend this important Sue Big Oil event. The letter below is an invitation from Sunshine Coast Sue Big Oil.
Dear Supporters,
On July 11th let’s hold fossil fuel companies accountable for climate change!
Like other communities in BC, ours is facing a rising tide of climate costs, even as global fossil fuel companies like Chevron and Shell post record profits. Fossil fuel companies knew their products would cause climate chaos over 40 years ago, but they decided to hide what they knew and to continue to push their polluting products. With help from West Coast Environmental Law, we’re asking City Council to join with other BC municipal governments to sue large oil companies for a fair share of the costs taxpayers face because of the climate emergency.
You can help!
On Tuesday, July 11, 2023, citizens involved in the “Sue Big Oil” effort will be presenting our case at City Hall on Duncan St. At 3 p.m. we’ll rally out front, for a festive gathering. Then at 3:30 there will be a formal presentation in Council chambers.
We’ll have some snacks on hand, but feel free to bring your own if you like. We’ll also have some signs, but more is better. (Ideas for slogans: “Fair Share Climate Costs” or “Join the Lawsuit” or “We Shouldn’t Bear Climate Costs Alone”….)
We’re delighted that some local young people intend to be there. Also, Andrew Gage, a Staff Lawyer from West Coast Environmental Law, is making a special trip over to Powell River to join the rally and delegation. Let’s join them in this exercise of civic engagement!
Please invite your friends; numbers can make a real difference.
