What is the Advisory Planning Commission (APC)?
The Advisory Planning Commission is a group of community members who serve as a link between the local community and Council, bringing forward community perspectives to inform decision-making. The APC meets once per month for about 1.5 hours to make recommendations to Council on matters related to land use, community planning, and proposed amendments and initiatives to the Official Community Plan (OCP) and Zoning Bylaw.
The APC is a powerful forum for amplifying the voices of community members who endorse balanced growth that supports a growing population while protecting biodiversity and preserving the natural spaces we love and rely on.
Who Should Apply to Be Part of the APC?
Anyone who has the capacity and is enthusiastic about being a voice for their community! If you have experience with community planning, environmental issues, social planning, and/or urban design, this is a wonderful opportunity to apply your knowledge and make a lasting, positive impact on your community.
Consideration will be given to geographic representation, occupation, related experience, and demonstrated community service to ensure a Commission that best represents the community.
Can I Really Make a Difference?
Yes, you can! As an APC member, you will provide crucial input that guides decisions on land use, environmental protection, construction, and development. The APC plays a key role in shaping Official Community Plans (OCPs) and local bylaws. By amplifying community perspectives and contributing your voice to these processes, you help ensure that community planning decisions and policies further sustainable development while safeguarding the natural systems that sustain us.
If you want to learn more about how we can protect sensitive ecosystems, support climate resilience, and promote responsible development through environmentally-grounded policy decisions incorporated into local government tools such as OCPs and bylaws, we invite you to check out our Green Bylaws campaign.
How Do I Apply?
The District of Sechelt is accepting applications from those who wish to serve on the Advisory Planning Commission until Wednesday, January 21st, 2026, at 4:30 pm. You can apply and find out more at this link.
Why This Matters
The SCCA’s long history of advocating for environmentally responsible governance has shown that the dedication of conservation-minded community members can translate into concrete laws and community plans that protect biodiversity. By participating in the ACP, you can enhance decision-making, connect community members with their environment, improve planning outcomes, and foster greater community support for sustainable growth.
Participating in the ACP can be both inspiring and empowering. It allows individuals to connect with a community on the Sunshine Coast that truly cares for one another and the preservation of our vital habitats. Being part of the ACP helps strengthen relationships between residents and local government, reinforce collective commitment to conservation, and foster trust in planning outcomes.
If you are passionate about conservation and community planning, we encourage you to apply for the Advisory Planning Commission position with the District of Sechelt and be a voice for conservation in your community!
