Current Volunteer Opportunities

Events Support

We host annual events you may have already attended, such as the Sunshine Coast Ocean Festival or a candidates' meeting during election cycles. You may also have visited the SCCA booth at community events like Earth Day, Syiyaya Days or a Labour Day Picnic.

  • These events provide a wonderful opportunity to meet like-minded people who share your passion for conservation and biodiversity while also helping to recruit new members and volunteers.
  • The time commitment is minimal—you can volunteer for just an hour or stay for the entire event, which typically lasts about three hours. This is a great chance to connect with others in your community and demonstrate how important conservation is to you and the SCCA. You’ll be showcasing our successes!
  • You do not need to be an expert in all aspects of SCCA’s work. The key is to show your passion for conservation and your support for our initiatives and to be ready to share that with others. Your involvement can help us expand our network of supporters.
  • If you’d like, we offer volunteers a brief orientation session that outlines some of our successful projects so that you can become more familiar with our work. Feel free to bring a friend to the orientation or to join us at an event!

June 1- 9 is Ocean Week at the Vancouver Aquarium!

Fish Migration Day

This virtual program is dedicated to the wild world of migratory fish species. Learning why certain fish do and other don’t! Through innovative strategies and community engagement, you will learn to restore habitats, remove migration barriers, and promote sustainable fishing practices.

SC Streamkeepers Invasive Plant Removal

We have a gift in our community, Roberts Creek! It is the 2nd major spawning creeks on the Sunshine Coast, let’s do what we can to protect and restore the important salmon habitat and wildlife corridor it provides!

Marine Impacts of Private Moorage in kalpilin (Pender Harbour)

Docks and other overwater structures are common features along urbanized shorelines. Though these structures can provide commercial and recreational opportunities, they may also have adverse impacts on the marine environment and other coastal land uses. Green Crab Monitoring along the Pacific Coast

Join our NEMO talk on June 4th to hear from Tyranna Souque, a data manager/early detection lead with the Coastal Restoration Society, an environmental non-profit based out of Vancouver Island, BC. Tyranna works alongside Indigenous governments and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada on two projects on the coast of Vancouver Island and the mainland that aim to control and mitigate the spread of invasive European green crab within British Columbia and collect integral information that will guide future management efforts.

Herring Happenings of 2024

Over the past several years, the Átl’ka7tsem / Howe Sound Marine Stewardship Initiative (MSI) has partnered closely with the Squamish Nation Rights & Title Department to document herring spawn within their traditional territory, with a Two-Eyed Seeing approach.

Citizen Science in Action!

Dianne Sanford from Friends of Forage Fish will be hosting a hands-on sampling session at Friendship park in Sechelt. Come down to learn about what we do when we sample the beach for surf smelt and pacific sand lance eggs.

Coastlines, community, and climate activism: lessons from the ocean
