This November, the Sunshine Coast Conservation Association (SCCA) is teaming up with the Loon Foundation for the annual Sunshine Coast BioBlitz; a week-long celebration of biodiversity and citizen science. From forests to foreshore, this event invites the community to explore, observe, and connect with the extraordinary ecosystems that make the Sunshine Coast so unique.

Featured Collaboration: The Soils & Forest Health Walk
This year’s BioBlitz introduces an exciting new collaboration: a Soils and Forest Health Walk led by Dr. Cindy Prescott, Professor of Forest Ecology at UBC, and created in partnership with the Chatelech Secondary Environmental Club.
This 60–90-minute guided walk will introduce students to the world beneath their feet, revealing the intricate networks of life in local forest soils and how they sustain ecosystem health. Participants will uncover stories of decomposition, nutrient cycling, and the vital role of fungi and roots in maintaining resilient forest systems.
This walk is part of the student programming for this year’s BioBlitz. It reflects the growing youth engagement across the Coast, a collaboration supported by local NGOs, Talaysay Tours, and the broader community.

Why It Matters
The BioBlitz is more than a weekend event; it’s a living example of community-based science in action. By documenting species and sharing knowledge, we help build a clearer picture of biodiversity across the Coast, from creeks and intertidal zones to forests and meadows.
This year’s BioBlitz also celebrates the power of collaboration between our NGOs, educators, youth, and local guides — to inspire a new generation of stewards and deepen our collective understanding of the place.
