World Migratory Bird Day

Celebrate Birds, Near and Far

Every year, millions of birds embark on incredible journeys across continents and oceans. These seasonal migrations connect us to ecosystems thousands of kilometres away, reminding us that protecting biodiversity is truly a global responsibility.

That’s why World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) is celebrated twice each year:

  • Spring migration on the second Saturday in May (May 10, 2025)
  • Fall migration on the second Saturday in October (October 11, 2025)

Not all birds migrate at the same time, and the locations for stopovers differ by region. As a result, World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) events are held throughout the year in communities worldwide. These events provide an opportunity to pause, observe the skies, and appreciate the winged travellers that connect various ecosystems.

Celebrate Birds Here at Home

On the Sunshine Coast, one of the best ways to connect with these global journeys is through the Christmas Bird Count. Coordinated locally by the Sunshine Coast Naturalists Society, this annual count brings together volunteers of all ages and skill levels to record every bird seen in a single day.

The data collected feeds into a continent-wide survey, now more than 120 years old, providing critical information on bird populations and long-term trends. The Sunshine Coast Conservation Association is proud to participate in this effort every year, adding our voices—and our binoculars—to the cause.

Why Join the Count?

  • Discover local biodiversity: You’ll be amazed at how many species can be spotted in a single day, even in your own neighbourhood.
  • Support global science: Your observations contribute to one of the longest-running citizen science projects in the world.
  • Build community: Birding together is fun, social, and a great way to spend time outdoors in the winter season.
  • Protect ecosystems: By monitoring birds, we gain a better understanding of the health of local habitats—and the urgent need to safeguard them.

Be Part of It

This December, join bird lovers across the Sunshine Coast and be part of the Christmas Bird Count. Whether you’re a seasoned birder or just curious, your participation matters. Together, we can celebrate birds and help protect the habitats they—and we—depend on.

Sign up for the Christmas Bird Count through Birds Canada to be connected with your local circle, including the Sunshine Coast Naturalists Society.
