Sunshine Coast Trail to Receive Funding

Thanks to the work of many individuals and groups, the Powell River Parks and Wilderness Society will receive $1.5 million from the Island Coastal Economic Trust (ICET) to make improvements on the Sunshine Coast Trail.

The project will involve the reconstruction of a barrier free wilderness hiking trail around Inland Lake, trail improvements and safety measures on the 180 kilometre long trail, a fully accessible wilderness camp at Thornton Bay, a new staging and parking area above Saltery Bay, and the construction of wilderness huts on Mount Troubridge and Tinhat Mountain, as well as eight open wilderness shelters at key locations along the trail.

SC trailProject partners include the Powell River Model Community Project for Persons with Disabilities and School District 47. The total cost of the project is estimated at $3,284,450.

PRPAWS will work on the project and also undertake ongoing maintenance of the trail once the work has been completed.

The Island Coastal Economic Trust makes strategic investments in economic development priorities on Vancouver Island north of the Malahat, as well as the Powell River and Sunshine Coast Regional Districts. The current chair is Barry Janyk, Mayor of the Town of Gibsons.
