shíshálh nation and BC Government Land Use Planning Process, Phase 2

The SCCA has been involved in land use planning on the Sunshine Coast since our inception, with the goal of preserving biodiversity in our corner of the world. So we welcomed the opportunity in 2020 to provide input during Phase 1 of the shíshálh-BC Land Use Planning Process.

That planning process was initiated in response to the signing in October 2018 of the shíshálh-BC Foundation Agreement. The goal of the Agreement was to provide “clear management direction on”:

  • biodiversity,
  • watershed integrity,
  • resources important to shíshálh culture, and
  • sustainable economic development.

Why this Land Use Planning Matters

For the community in general, there are many reasons why this project is important, including advancing Reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples and working to ensure sustainable economic development.

The SCCA is involved in this project because it will have significant impact on two areas covered by our mandate: preserving biodiversity on the Sunshine Coast and maintaining the integrity of our watersheds.

Phase 2 Underway

This spring (2025), the SCCA again provided input – this time on what Phase 2 engagement activities should be.

We encourage you to participate in the available engagement opportunities.

Here’s where the Land Use Planning project is currently at:
