A Message from Sunshine Coast Seniors for Climate
Sunshine Coast Seniors for Climate invites you, your family, friends and workmates to join us on Saturday, September 20th, from 12:30 – 2:00 pm at the Davis Bay Pier, in Sechelt, to hear speakers, raise your voice in song and show passing Sunshine Coasters that you care about the climate crisis and want to help Draw The Line: For People. For Peace. For the Planet. Please share with your network.
Sunshine Coast Seniors for Climate is affiliated with the national Seniors for Climate, formed in 2024. We are supporting and mobilizing for the September 20th Draw The Line: For People. For Peace. For the Planet. We bring a powerful voice, grounded in experience, moral clarity, and love for future generations.
We are proud to be a part of the national mobilization which brings together diverse groups with different messages. Our role: Make the climate emergency – and its impact on seniors, our families, friends and neighbours – loud, visible, and impossible to ignore.
Our Priorities
Mobilize Seniors and our allies to Act on Climate
Why it matters: We care deeply about leaving behind a livable world for our children and our grandchildren. The climate crisis is not future tense – seniors, our families, friends, and neighbours are living it now!
- Costs for food, housing and insurance are rising fast.
- Wildfires displace communities and pollute our air.
- Smoke is deadly for seniors and others with heart and lung conditions.
- Extreme heat is rising – many of us live without air conditioning.
- Storms, floods, outages leave isolated and medically vulnerable people at risk.
Build A Unified Movement for System Change
Why it matters: We cannot solve the climate crisis in isolation. We stand with youth, workers, migrants, Indigenous leaders and peace advocates to demand a just future for all! While our focus in climate, we know it’s connected to bigger forces:
- Displacement and migration – driven by climate disasters.
- Wealth inequality – impacts housing, healthcare, food security of particular concern for seniors and lower income Canadians.
- Colonialism and racism – fragments movements and weakens our power.
- Loss of democratic rights – makes effective organizing harder.
- War and militarism – worsens climate impacts and drains critical public funds.
What we’re fighting for
End the Era of Fossil Fuels – Shift to Renewables
- End fossil fuel expansion. No new oil and gas projects
- Just transition to a 100% renewable energy economy
- Invest in a Youth Climate Corps and a publicly owned East-West electricity grid
Make Polluters Pay – Fund the Public Good
- Cancel subsidies, tax Big Oil and the ultra-rich
- Invest in affordable housing, healthcare, transit, food, arts, education and good jobs
Protect People from Climate Harm
- Retrofit homes with heat pumps
- Fund cooling centres and clean air shelters
- Strengthen healthcare for climate-related risks
Uphold Indigenous Sovereignty
- Fund Indigenous-led justice and climate solutions
- Honour Free, Prior and Informed Consent
Respect Migrants Rights
- Protect migrant rights – Grant resident status to migrants
- End exploitation, deportations and wage theft
Stand for Justice and Peace, Not War
- Peacekeeping, not war
