The Sunshine Coast boasts an abundance of biodiversity, with its lush coastal temperate rainforests and vibrant marine ecosystems. The Sunshine Coast Conservation Association (SCCA) and its members are dedicated to preserving this natural treasure for generations to come. One effective way to contribute to this mission is by becoming a member of the District of Sechelt’s Advisory Planning Commission (APC).
What is the Advisory Planning Commission (APC)?
The APC is a group of community members appointed to provide recommendations to local governments regarding development, land use, community planning, and modifications to the Official Community Plan and Zoning Bylaw.
Can I really make a difference?
Absolutely! The APC plays a vital role in community planning by acting as a crucial link between residents and the council. This connection ensures that local perspectives are considered throughout the planning process. By participating, you can enhance decision-making, engage community members with their environment, improve planning outcomes, and foster greater community support for development.
How do I Get Involved
The District of Sechelt is currently seeking new APC members to serve a two-year term from early 2025 until December 2026. They are looking for individuals with diverse viewpoints. Selection will be based on geographic representation, occupational background, related experience, and demonstrated commitment to community service.
This is a fantastic opportunity for those passionate about their community, especially those with expertise in conservation, earth sciences, or social planning, to contribute their knowledge to urban planning initiatives.
As an APC member, you will play a crucial role in ensuring that conservation priorities are woven into local and regional planning efforts. Your insights will help forge policies that protect our natural environment while accommodating growth.
The Importance of Having Conservation Voices at the Table
Having advocates for conservation on the APC is essential for various reasons. Without our input, environmental considerations may not receive the attention they deserve in long-term planning efforts. The SCCA’s decades of advocacy for protecting critical habitats illustrate how the engagement of conservation-minded individuals in community processes can yield significant benefits for biodiversity.
Moreover, community participation in planning fosters trust and collaboration between local governments and residents. When citizens are actively involved, they are more likely to support and adhere to planning initiatives, which leads to more sustainable and effective outcomes. This collaborative approach not only benefits the environment but also strengthens community bonds and nurtures a shared commitment to conservation for the long haul.
