DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of this remarkable local film about the estuary of one of the mighty rivers that feeds the Salish Sea. Ken Ashley\, Executive Producer will be present in a Q&A session after the film. \n75% of the plants and animals are gone\, and if we don’t act now they may be lost forever. Two young filmmakers embark to unmask the forgotten soul of Canada’s greatest ecological wonder. \n\n\n\n\nWhere millions of birds and billions of fish once thrived\, now mere thousands struggle to co-exist with the unregulated growth of Metro-Vancouver in British Columbia\, Canada. Local filmmakers Brendan Chu and Chris Jenkins explore the Fraser Estuary\, the original river delta beneath the urban sprawl of Vancouver. \nTo solve the mysteries of this forgotten land\, they meet with environmental activists\, First Nations leaders\, and specialized biologists. Led by indigenous wisdom and western studies\, the filmmakers witness beautiful animals and mysterious sights. Soon\, they see the “death of a thousand cuts” this once beautiful land has suffered through. \nA new threat looms over the Fraser Estuary; in the migratory path of the fish and birds. Various concerned experts protest; ex-government workers reveal how environmental management has slipped into the hands of corporations and indigenous representatives describe how their stewardship is ignored by the decision makers of industry. \nThe filmmakers desire to use this film to bring the soul back to the Fraser; through educating the local public about the ecological history they walk on. \n\n\n\n\nRead Film Details and Watch Trailer \nAbout Ken Ashley\nKen received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. at UBC in the Zoology Department\, specializing in aquatic ecology\, and an M.A.Sc. and Ph.D. at UBC in the Faculty of Applied Sciences in Civil and Environmental Engineering. He worked for the Ministry of Environment in the Fisheries Research Section for 28 years and is currently Director of the Rivers Institute at BCIT and a Professor in BCIT’s Ecological Restoration Program. \nDoor prize\nKen Ashley has donated three copies of the book The Soul of the Fraser. DESCRIPTION:In 2021\, Átl’ka7tsem/Howe Sound was designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Region. Come learn about our Biosphere and its unique ecosystem. Bob Turner’s short film A UNESCO Biosphere Region for Átl’ka7tsem / Howe Sound precedes our feature\, Uncharted Waters\, which shows four diverse young activists’ work to protect our Biosphere: local marine ecologist Fiona Beaty\, Bowen artist Di\, and Skwxwú7mesh Nation members Jonathan Williams and Nolan Rudkowsky. All four contributed to the Howe Sound Marine Reference Guide\, an interactive map of marine life habitats and man-made influences. Filmmakers Molly Dennis and Hannah Siden (@UnchartedWatersFilm) created a special introductory video just for us. Ian Winn and Courtney Smaha will answer questions about the Biosphere and map. SUMMARY:National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
DESCRIPTION:The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is designated as an opportunity to ‘recognize and commemorate the legacy of residential schools.’ It was originally proposed in 2015 by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada\, which under Action 80 called upon the federal government\, in collaboration with Aboriginal peoples\, to establish a statutory holiday “to honour Survivors\, their families\, and communities\, and ensure that public commemoration of the history and legacy of residential schools remains a vital component of the reconciliation process.” \nYou may already be aware that September 30th has been observed since 2013 as Orange Shirt Day\, a movement to recognize the colonial legacy of residential schools and commit to the ongoing process of reconciliation. Orange Shirt Day recalls the experience of residential school Survivor Phyllis Webstad\, who at six was stripped of her shiny new orange shirt on her first day attending the St. Joseph Mission Residential School near Williams Lake\, BC. The date of September 30th was chosen because it was the time of year when Indigenous children were removed from their families and forced to attend residential schools.

DESCRIPTION:Join in the continued efforts to remove invasive plants on the last Saturday of the month\, the next one is September 25th as the Sunshine Coast Streamkeepers continue to remove the invasive plants (ivy and blackberry).\n\nThey will be at the Lower Road bridge over Roberts Creek west of the Roberts Creek Legion\, 3064 Lower Rd\, Roberts Creek\, BC.\n\nEQUIPMENT NEEDED:\nPlease bring gloves\, eye protection and small or large clippers if you have them.\nThey will bring tarps\, rakes and garbage cans to collect the debris.\n\nWHAT TO WEAR:\nGood sturdy waterproof boots would be very helpful along with work gloves\, rain gear (if raining) and outdoor/gardening clothes that include long sleeves and a hat is recommended.\n\nDIRECTIONS:\nYou will find them at the Lower Road bridge over Roberts Creek\, this is about a block from the RC Library/Gumboot Cafe.\nThey are also looking for a person to transport the ivy – If anyone has a pickup or a trailer to take to the green waste depot\, that would be awesome!\n\nIf you have any questions please send an email to scstreamkeepers@gmail.com\n\nWe acknowledge with gratitude that we work and live on the unceded land of the shíshálh (Sechelt) and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) peoples.
