SUMMARY:Forage Fish Sampling
DESCRIPTION:In the next few months\, join us as we sample forage fish throughout the Sunshine Coast. \nWhat are forage fish? Forage fish are super-abundant schooling fishes that are the building blocks of the food chain for 100’s of species of birds\, marine mammals\, and fishes. \nWhy do we sample them? The Friends of Forage Fish group on the Sunshine Coast collects spawning data (i.e.\, finding eggs) on the beaches of the Sunshine Coast\, to assess the population status in hopes to see positive signs of spawning.

SUMMARY:Last Day for FLP Public Engagement Survey
DESCRIPTION:A Forest Landscape Plan (FLP) is a new forestry planning tool. \nFLPs will play an important role in changing forest management.\nThey will replace existing Forest Stewardship Plans (FSP). This is significant as FSPs do not consider or coordinate overlapping values or interests. \nFLPs are being developed in collaboration with Indigenous governing bodies and forest licensees. Planning process includes engagement with local communities and new opportunities for public input. \nThe easiest way to get involved is through the FLP Pilot public survey.

SUMMARY:Free Herring Curtain Demonstration (Mission Park\, Davis Bay)
DESCRIPTION:Come and learn about Herring Curtains and why they are Important for Pacific Herring survival \nWe will demonstrate the construction of a herring curtain and explain why such curtains are important to the Pacific Herring.  There will be extra materials on hand for participants to help make a herring curtain\, and these will be stored for usage next spring during spawning season. \nMaking a herring curtain is easy\, it’s quick and it’s important for the survival and revival of the pacific herring species! We cordially invite you to come see for yourself how you can help bring back the numbers of pacific herring in the Salish Sea! \nAbout Margie Garrard \nMargie Garrard is a Rotarian and a dedicated environmentalist. For the past few years she and her team of Rotarians have hung herring curtains off docks during spawning season to provide temporary safe habitat because of the loss of natural habitat for spawning fish due to pollution and climate change. Drawing on research done by other groups\, Rotary teams are trained to clean and check these curtains weekly\, so that predators such as starfish and urchins don’t devour the herring roe on the curtains. After the roe have hatched in a few weeks\, and made their way off to sea\, the curtains are pulled\, cleaned\, repaired\, dried and stored till next spawn season!

SUMMARY:Free NEMO Talk: Generation Restoration - feeding hope and resilience back into kelp forests and the community (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Salish Sea kelp ecosystems are among the most vital and most threatened ecosystems in Canadian waters. Kelp forests are foundational and provide critical habitat and food for diverse species\, including commercially\, recreationally\, and culturally valuable species such as salmon\, rockfish\, lingcod\, herring\, prawns and crab. Kelp provides vital ecosystem services\, stabilizing shorelines\, filtering water\, mitigating storm surges\, and capturing large quantities of carbon\, helping to mitigate climate change and counteract ocean acidification. \nJoin Lee-Ann Ennis as she tells her inspiring story of cultivating kelp for fish habitat and restoration projects. With a background studying marine science at UVic\, and Bamfield Marine Science Centre\, Lee-Ann had picked up experience cultivating red seaweeds for agar\, the most common phycocolloid used as gelling agents in the food\, biotech and cosmetic industries. Lee-Ann rekindled her passion for seaweed science when she witnessed first hand the disappearance of kelp on the Sunshine Coast. She realized how truly important kelp are as habitat for a wide range of fish and invertebrate species\, serving as resting\, foraging and essential nursery grounds. It occurred to her that by cultivating kelp\, she could actually make a tangible difference for quite a few million fish. Lee-Ann has been busy ever since and will share her story that may inspire the next generation of restoration\, feeding hope and resilience back into kelp forests and the community. \nFree \nRegister for a Free Festival Pass to Receive Online Event Links

SUMMARY:Free Hands-On Demonstration with Sunshine Coast Friends of Forage Fish
DESCRIPTION:Come out to the beach at Friendship Park\, Trail Bay\, and learn about who forage fish are\, and why they are important. Then we’ll get into a demonstration of the sampling process used by citizen scientists all along the Salish Sea to determine where these important little fish are choosing to spawn.  Bring your gumboots and curiosity for this hands-on demonstration. \nAbout Dianne Sanford \nDianne has been coordinating forage fish sampling on the lower Sunshine Coast for several decades.  She works with volunteer citizen scientists to determine sand lance and surf smelt spawning presence at local beaches\, information which was previously undocumented.  This information is then submitted to a central database for public information. \nFree

SUMMARY:Free NEMO Talk: Tracking Dungeness Crab across the Salish Sea
DESCRIPTION:Driven by communities and led by the Hakai Institute\, Sentinels of Change is a decade-long project that uses light traps to investigate the ecology and dynamics of a critically important species in our inland sea: Dungeness crab. \nThe first year of our project had one trap on the Sunshine Coast within a network that spanned the Salish Sea. This year there are three more (does Gibsons count?). Throughout the spring and summer\, groups of dedicated volunteers check the traps regularly and watch the crabs (and other species) come and go. \nJoin us to hear about our findings so far and how important community science is in our efforts to understand ecosystems and environmental change. \nAbout Heather Earle \nHeather is a marine ecologist with the Hakai Institute and project lead for Sentinels of Change. She works with communities and scientists across the Salish Sea to monitor nearshore ecosystems and track change. \nFree \nRegister for a Free Festival Pass to Receive Online Event Links

SUMMARY:Free NEMO Talk: Eelgrass and Beyond - Protecting Resilient Estuaries on the Sunshine Coast (Online)
DESCRIPTION:For the last two decades\, SeaChange has worked with communities surrounding the Salish Sea to conserve\, restore\, and protect nearshore marine areas\, so vital as nurseries for salmon and all life they depend upon. As climate changes become more impactful to these vital marine nurseries\, it is increasingly important to protect those that have a higher capacity to adapt to rising sea levels and increasing storm events. SeaChange is embarking on a four year plan to identify these estuaries and restore and conserve their unique features to increase opportunities to survive climate effects and processes. \nJoin Nikki Wright as she talks about some of the activities planned by Sea Change\, including work in the Sechelt Inlet. \nSeaChange surveyed eelgrass within the Islands Trust Area between 2012 -2014. Maps created from these surveys can be viewed and downloaded from the Islands Trust Fund Ecosystem Inventories website. \nAbout Nikki Wright \nNikki Wright served as the Executive Director of SeaChange Marine Conservation Society from 1998 to 2022.  SeaChange is a non-profit charitable society working with community partners on marine education\, conservation and restoration in the Salish Sea and BC. In 1999\, 1800 eelgrass (Zostera marina) shoots were transplanted in Tod Inlet\, a small inlet of Saanich Inlet north of Victoria BC. From that success was born the Seagrass Conservation Working Group in 2001 and over 40 restored eelgrass habitats within the Salish Sea. \nRegister for a Free Festival Pass to Receive Online Event Links

SUMMARY:Free NEMO Talk: Forage Fish & the Chinook Salmon Connection (Online)
DESCRIPTION:Fish diet studies can help us understand changes in marine ecosystems. Will Duguid (UVic and PSF) will provide an introduction to key prey of Chinook and Coho salmon and discuss what salmon diets are teaching us about the food web that supports our salmon and the species that rely on them.  He will also present new insights on the migration ecology of Pacific Herring and introduce current and upcoming research programs. \nAbout Will Duguid \nWill Duguid is a postdoctoral researcher working under Francis Juanes at the University of Victoria and leads the Chinook Salmon winter ecology component of the Pacific Salmon Foundation (PSF) and BC Conservation Foundation-led Bottlenecks to Survival Study (pdf). He also initiated\, and continues to oversee\, the UVic Adult Salmon Diet Program. Will is a lifelong salmon enthusiast having worked as a recreational fishing guide and as a salmon stock assessment biologist with LGL limited\, primarily in support of BC First Nations’ stock assessment programs. He completed an MSc in crustacean reproduction and development and a PhD in juvenile Chinook Salmon marine ecology under the umbrella of PSF’s Salish Sea Marine Survival Program. \nFree \nRegister for a Free Festival Pass to Receive Online Event Links

SUMMARY:Free Film Screening: The Soul of the Fraser (Raven's Cry Theatre)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of this remarkable local film about the estuary of one of the mighty rivers that feeds the Salish Sea. Ken Ashley\, Executive Producer will be present in a Q&A session after the film. \n75% of the plants and animals are gone\, and if we don’t act now they may be lost forever. Two young filmmakers embark to unmask the forgotten soul of Canada’s greatest ecological wonder. \n\n\n\n\nWhere millions of birds and billions of fish once thrived\, now mere thousands struggle to co-exist with the unregulated growth of Metro-Vancouver in British Columbia\, Canada. Local filmmakers Brendan Chu and Chris Jenkins explore the Fraser Estuary\, the original river delta beneath the urban sprawl of Vancouver. \nTo solve the mysteries of this forgotten land\, they meet with environmental activists\, First Nations leaders\, and specialized biologists. Led by indigenous wisdom and western studies\, the filmmakers witness beautiful animals and mysterious sights. Soon\, they see the “death of a thousand cuts” this once beautiful land has suffered through. \nA new threat looms over the Fraser Estuary; in the migratory path of the fish and birds. Various concerned experts protest; ex-government workers reveal how environmental management has slipped into the hands of corporations and indigenous representatives describe how their stewardship is ignored by the decision makers of industry. \nThe filmmakers desire to use this film to bring the soul back to the Fraser; through educating the local public about the ecological history they walk on. \n\n\n\n\nRead Film Details and Watch Trailer \nAbout Ken Ashley\nKen received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. at UBC in the Zoology Department\, specializing in aquatic ecology\, and an M.A.Sc. and Ph.D. at UBC in the Faculty of Applied Sciences in Civil and Environmental Engineering. He worked for the Ministry of Environment in the Fisheries Research Section for 28 years and is currently Director of the Rivers Institute at BCIT and a Professor in BCIT’s Ecological Restoration Program. \nDoor prize\nKen Ashley has donated three copies of the book The Soul of the Fraser. To be awarded by random draw.
